FIBA 3x3 Basketball: Quick Guide for Parents
3x3 is a fast-paced, exciting version of basketball played on a half-court with one hoop. Here are the key rules to know:
The Basics:
Teams: 3 players per team on the court, plus 1 or 2 substitutes (optional).
Court: Half-court, one hoop.
Ball: A size 6 basketball is used for all players (even men's categories).
Game Start: Coin flip decides which team gets the first possession.
How the Game is Played:
Scoring:
Shots inside the arc (2-point line) are worth 1 point.
Shots beyond the arc (2-point line) are worth 2 points.
Free throws are worth 1 point.
Game Length:
The first team to score 21 points wins, or...
The team with the most points after 10 minutes wins.
If tied after 10 minutes, it goes to overtime: the first team to score 2 points wins.
Check Ball: Before starting play after a dead ball (foul, out-of-bounds, score), the defensive player must "check" the ball with the offensive player at the top of the arc.
"Clear" the Ball: After a defensive rebound or steal, the ball must be dribbled or passed behind the 2-point arc before a shot can be taken.
Shot Clock: Teams have 12 seconds to shoot once they have possession.
Fouls & Penalties:
Team Fouls: After 6 team fouls, every subsequent foul results in 2 free throws.
Fouls 7, 8, 9: 2 free throws.
Foul 10 onwards: 2 free throws AND possession.
Substitutions:
Substitutions can only happen when the ball is dead, before the check-ball. There's no limit to how many substitutions can be made.
Important Note: The referee's decision is final and designed to keep the game flowing and fair.
